Scholarships and Financial Aid
Graduate Teaching Assistantship
Each year the department awards up to three teaching assistantships to new
or current full-time graduate students
in English. Successful applicants will receive training in the teaching
of writing the first semester and conduct a section of freshman composition the
second. After having completed the program, assistants in good standing will be
eligible to become part of our adjunct staff. Total remuneration, including
stipend, is approximately $5,000

Roger B. Blood Memorial Scholarship Each year, through the Graduate Dean, the department awards approximately $600 to a promising incoming graduate student in English, with preference given to someone 35 years of age or older. The scholarship was established by the family of Roger Blood, a former student in our program. Students do not apply for the award, but if anyone wishes information about it, she/he is encouraged to speak to Kenneth Florey, Graduate Coordinator, at (203) 392-6733.
Graduate School Graduate Assistantship
Each year the Graduate School awards 10 assistantships in a competition open to any
full-time student who is working
towards the Master's Degree or a Sixth-Year diploma. Stipends are
typically $16,000, and
successful applicants will assist a teacher/mentor in one of her/his classes. Students in the
English Department have done quite well in obtaining assistantships, generally

Graduate Research Fellowship Competition
Each year the Graduate School awards 10 fellowships in a competition open to any
full-time student who is working
towards the Master's Degree or a Sixth-Year diploma. Stipends are
typically $8,000. Students in the

GSAC Grants for Scholarly Conferences
Money is available from the Graduate Student Affairs Committee to any graduate
student enrolled in a degree program to help defray expenses when going to
a scholarly conference. Students can receive up to $75 to attend a conference
and up to $300 to deliver a paper. For further information, consult Arlene

FINANCIAL AID
Federal Loans and Federal Work Study
Graduate students of all income levels are eligible to apply for federal
student loans and federal work-study (part-time employment). To qualify, all applicants must file
the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the established priority
date to receive their financial aid for the payment of the University bill
(tuition and fees). To file the FAFSA, students may complete the application via
the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov or obtain a
paper FAFSA, complete the form, and mail it to the federal processor, or
complete the renewal application mailed to a returning student by the federal
processor. Interested students should consult with John Giordano in the

Federal Work Study (Needs-Based)
There are also needs-based federal work-study funds available to graduate
students who seek part-time employment on campus. If eligible, graduate students could be assigned in their respective
academic area of study. Employment applications are available in the Financial
Aid Office in the Wintergreen Building. Again, interested students should
consult with John Giordano in the Financial Aid Office. Call 392-5222.
Federal Stafford Loan Program (Subsidized
and Unsubsidized)
The Federal Stafford Loan Program enables students to
borrow money to help supplement their education. Students must demonstrate
financial need to be eligible for the subsidized Federal Stafford Loan. The
Federal Unsubsidized loan is available to all students regardless of need. Call
the Financial Aid Office at 392-5222 for further information.
Resident Advisor
There are openings
for resident advisors for both graduate and undergraduate students. Benefits
include full room and board and a stipend of $250 a semester. Duties include
being on duty one night a week and one weekend a month. Typically, the RA
devotes about 12 hours a week to the position. Applications as well as
additional information can be obtained from the Department of Residence Life at
Schwartz Hall 100.
Resident Internship
Interns
work for the Department of Residence Life on a Monday-Friday schedule of
8:30-4:30. In return they receive full room and board, a waiver of tuition, and
a stipend of $5,000. For further information, contact the Department of
