Bethanie Hamlett Tucker on Understanding and Engaging Under-Resourced College Students
Southern is pleased to host Dr. Bethanie Hamlett Tucker, Ed.D., one of the authors of Understanding and Engaging Under-Resourced College Students. This project is supported by a Faculty Development Grant.
Understanding and Engaging Under-Resourced College Students is one of the first books of its kind to provide postsecondary educators, administrators, and student support services personnel with a comprehensive look at the needs of under-resourced students through heightened insight regarding the environments associated with economic classes.
Tucker will present two 3-hour workshops in ASC 301 from 8:30 to 11:30 and 12:30 to 3:30 that provide insights into the student who is "under-resourced"- that is, the student who is surviving based on limited internal and external resources, unaware that there are additional resources to work from and develop as tools for attaining success. Topics include:
- The impact of economic class on student preparedness
- Building on students' existing resources, experiences, and abilities
- Developing student success and skills through curriculum design and programming
- Partnering with communities and businesses to support academic progress
- Helping students look beyond the classroom and find ways of engaging with the larger community
