A public lecture in honor of Forrest Peterson, founder and first chairperson of the Philosophy Department of Southern Connecticut State University

"John Dewey on Listening, Friendship, and Participation in School and Society"

Dr. Waks will discuss Dewey's views on mass communications technologies, and make some remarks about the new Web 2.0 communications technologies. The focus of the talk, is on Dewey's theory of listening.

Dr. Waks earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin, concentrating on social philosophy and American philosophy. He taught philosophy at Purdue and Stanford and philosophy of education at Temple. He is the author of more than 100 scholarly articles and scholarly book chapters, and of the book Technology's School (1995). He is co-founder of the National Technological Literacy Conferences, and co-director of a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute on philosophy of technology. He is the general editor of the book series Leaders in Educational Studies (Sense Publishers), and editor of the volumes on leaders in philosophy of education and in curriculum theory. He has served on the board of the John Dewey Society and its journals, Education and Culture and Educational Theory. His research focuses on the educational arrangements of global network society, and on the continuing relevance of American pragmatism.
