03/05 - Time: 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Physics Department Seminar
Dr. James Edson of the University of Connecticut, Avery Point, will speak about his research.
The talk will describe meteorological and oceanographic observations from a research cruise in the North Atlantic Ocean. During the cruise, Dr. Edson and his collaborators investigated a number of physical processes that exchange momentum, heat and mass between the ocean and atmosphere. Specifically, they directly measured the sensible and latent heat exchange between the ocean and atmosphere, which provides the energy that drives atmospheric motion. They also measured the momentum exchange from the atmosphere to the ocean, which is the frictional force (drag) that drives huge waves and currents in the ocean. The talk will focus on how these measurements were made and how they are ultimately used to improve marine weather forecasts. The talk will also provide some examples of what life at sea is like under these conditions.
