03/12 - Time: 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Physics Department Seminar
Dr. Sahar Allam of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory will give a talk entitled "Sloan Digital Sky Survey Strong Gravitational Lensing: Treasure Hunting and Sifting."
There are large samples of strong gravitational lenses that probe small (galaxy) scale masses (e.g., the Sloan Lens ACS Survey, the Sloan Quasar Lens Survey, and the COSMOS Survey). There are also large samples of strong lenses that probe large (rich cluster) scale masses (e.g., various rich Abell clusters and the Hennawi et al. 2008 Sloan Digital Sky Survey sample). The sample of strong lenses that probe intermediate (group/cluster-core) scale masses, however, is sparse, and so any significant additions to this sample are important. In this talk, Dr. Allam will describe her effort in hunting these systems in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data set.
