Poet/Editor Ryan Van Cleave

On Wednesday, March 12, from 1-2 p.m., the SCSU community is invited to come to Engleman 253D for an opportunity to meet Ryan Van Cleave and have a conversation with him about directing a press, editing anthologies, and publishing work in journals. There will also be time to ask individual questions about revising and preparing a manuscript in order to submit it for publication.

On March 12, Van Cleve will also conduct two writing workshops in ENG 266D. The first is from 2-3:15 p.m., and the second from 3:25-4:40 p.m. The SCSU community is welcome to attend.

On Thursday, March 13, Van Cleave will be in ENG 253D from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for conversations about editing, writing, and publishing with those who could not attend the program on Wednesday.

Born in Neenah, Wisconsin, Ryan G. Van Cleave grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago before attending Northern Illinois University where he studied English and philosophy.  He received his M.A. in fiction and American literature from Florida State University, as well as a Ph.D. in poetry and American literature. He is the author of five poetry collections, including a co-authored book (with Cuban-American writer Virgil Suarez) entitled Landscape & Dream.  Also with Virgil Suarez, he co-edited four poetry anthologies published by the University of Iowa Press, including Like Thunder: Poets Respond to Violence in America, which received the 2002 American Poetry Anthology Award.  Ryan is also the editor of Contemporary American Poetry: Behind the Scenes (Allyn & Bacon/Longman, 2003) and co-editor (with Todd James Pierce) of Behind the Short Story: From First to Final Draft (Allyn & Bacon/Longman, 2006).  He is the Jenny McKean Moore Writer-in-Washington at The George Washington University and was recently named Director of C&R Press, a nonprofit literary organization.
