Reception to Celebrate Major Gift/New Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders
The university community is invited to attend a reception celebrating the establishment of Southern's new Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders. The event will also mark the receipt of a major gift from an alumna that will help fund the recruitment of a distinguished visiting scholar for the center - Southern's first endowed chair.
Supported in part by a federal grant of $300,000, the autism center will offer clinical services, parental support, and training and technical assistance to schools, while disseminating information on the latest research developments in the field. As such, it will serve as a true resource for the regional community and the state.
State and national statistics have shown a rise in the incidence of children with autism during the last two decades. Southern is already a key player in teaching and research efforts regarding this developmental disorder. The Department of Special Education includes a Master of Science program with a specialization in autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. And in 2008, Gov. M. Jodi Rell authorized the university to take a lead role in developing a comprehensive statewide plan to better teach children with autism and other developmental disabilities.
Ruth Eren, associate professor of special education and reading, serves as co-director of the Center, along with Jim Granfield, senior advisor to Provost Selase W. Williams.
