Postponed: Southern Day of Service
The Day of Service in the New Haven Community which was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13, will be postponed until later this semester due to the tragic death of a New Haven Police officer earlier this week. The Day of Service is a collaborative project between the New Haven Police and the university, in which our students, faculty, and staff join together to clean up debris on the streets of the city.
On the night of Sept. 9, while responding to a violent domestic dispute, two New Haven Police cruisers collided, resulting in the death of Sgt. Dario "Scott" Aponte and severe injuries to Officer Diane Gonzalez, who is currently in critical condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Services for Sgt. Aponte are being held on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Southern Connecticut State University and the New Haven Police Department have enjoyed a long-term partnership, developed through countless activities including service projects, the annual Friends of Rudolph program, and several law enforcement initiatives. We are postponing this event out of respect for the New Haven Police, and are sending our sympathies and prayers to the New Haven Police Department, and to the family and loved ones of the deceased and injured officers.
The date on which the event will be rescheduled -- probably sometime in October -- will be announced in the near future.
