New Faculty Orientation
Welcome New Faculty to Southern Connecticut State University!
You are cordially invited to join us for a celebratory luncheon reception on Thursday, August 23, 2012, 12:00 - 2:00pm, in Lyman Center. This is an informal setting that will allow you to meet your other new colleagues and help address any pre-semester questions. Several university representatives will be on hand for informal introductions and resource sharing to help acclimate you to SCSU.
Your New Faculty Orientation program has been scheduled for Monday, August 27, 2012, 8:30am - 4:00pm in Engleman B 121. Key topics for the day include: introductions of new faculty, a tour of Buley Library, a profile of our students, an overview of our newly implemented Liberal Education Program, an introduction to learning technologies, classroom strategies, and resources for teaching and learning. Breakfast will be served at 8:30am and lunch will be served at 12:00pm.

Part-Time Faculty Reception and Orientation
You are cordially invited to attend the seventh annual Southern Connecticut State University Part-Time Reception and Orientation to be held on Thursday, August 23, 5:30 - 8:00pm, in the Engleman Hall Seminar Center, ENB 121. This event celebrates the many contributions that part-time faculty make to the Southern Community. It will also provide valuable information about Southern and introduce the wide variety of resources to support part-time faculty and their students.
The event begins with hors d'oeuvres and dinner hour snacks. The evening includes a welcome from our campus leaders, brief presentations on "What Outstanding Teachers Do: Best Practices," "Outstanding Teaching and Outstanding Advice for Adjuncts," and "Introducing e-Learning at SCSU." An interactive resource fair will help introduce you to the professionals and services in the areas of Faculty Development, the New Faculty Mentoring Program, AAUP, Human Resources, Buley Library, Student Supportive Services, and the Teaching and Learning Technologies Group.

Faculty Forum
You are cordially invited to participate in Forum XLIX on "Advancing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning." The event will be held on Tuesday, August 28, in Engleman C 112, beginning with a continental breakfast at 8:30 and followed by a luncheon at 1:00pm in Engleman B 121.
Our keynote speaker is Dr. Peter Felten, Assistant Provost, Director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, and Associate Professor of History at Elon University. He has published widely on engaged learning and the scholarship of teaching and learning, and is co-author of forthcoming books on faculty peer mentoring and on student-faculty partnerships in teaching and learning. Dr. Felten recently served as president of the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network, an international association for teaching and learning centers in higher education. His teaching at Elon aims to help students think critically and write clearly about the connections between the lives of individual people and larger themes in history. Dr. Felten earned a BA in history from Marquette University and a PhD in history from the University of Texas at Austin.
