Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. As an intentionally diverse and student-centered university, Southern is committed to academic excellence, access, social justice, and service for the public good. Founded as a teachers college in 1893, Southern has evolved over the past century into a comprehensive university offering 114 graduate and undergraduate programs in the liberal arts and professional disciplines. It is one of four universities in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities System. The University is located in New Haven, a city rich with arts and culture, and less than 90 miles from New York City and 140 miles from Boston.
Southern has recently completed a study of student success and is in the middle of developing a ten-year strategic plan. With new leadership across the University, it is an exciting time to join the SCSU community. The Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students provides strategic leadership and oversight for a comprehensive and integrated approach to the engagement, inclusion, and wellness of students at SCSU. The AVP/Dean of Students will work with colleagues across campus to develop programs, services, and initiatives that foster student involvement and engagement; diversity and inclusion; accountability, civility and respect; service learning, civic engagement, and volunteerism; and health and wellness. The Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students provides oversight for the following departments: Student Life, Campus Recreation, Multicultural Affairs, Judicial Programs, Student Health Center, Counseling Services, Drug and Alcohol Resource Center, Fitness Center, and the Women's Center. Overall, the AVP and Dean of Students will share responsibility for providing leadership to promote student satisfaction, achievement, progress, and success.
The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of ways to promote student success at a public, comprehensive, student-centered university and a strong commitment to working with campus stakeholders to create a more seamless learning environment for students. The preferred candidate will have experience working with behavioral intervention and crisis response initiatives; creative ideas about how to promote student connectedness and Southern spirit on a predominately commuter campus; and a commitment to creating a campus culture that exemplifies respect for one another. The ideal candidate will communicate a passion for making a difference in the lives of college students; possess strong written and verbal communication skills; have significant experience with supervision and building teams; value diversity of thought, experience, and background; and be a conscientious steward of human and fiscal resources. Additionally, the successful candidate will embrace the power of collaboration and shared leadership; demonstrate creativity and innovation; and be an effective decision maker.
A doctorate degree and ten years of progressively responsible leadership experience in higher education, preferably student affairs, are required.
