Foreign Language TEAching Certification Program
The department is very proud of its foreign language teacher development program. Connecticut state certification is rigorous, but is rewarded with salaries higher than national averages and recognition in most U.S. states. Language teachers at schools throughout Connecticut have received their initial teacher training at SCSU, and its graduates are eagerly sought by schools throughout the state. We certify teachers in French, German, Italian, and Spanish at the elementary and secondary levels.
There are several routes to certification. Undergraduates interested in FL teaching certification should pursue a major in the language they want to teach, in addition to completing coursework in education. Undergraduates or graduates interested in getting FLT certification in addition to their main certification program should pursue cross-endorsement. Individuals with undergraduate degrees in other disciplines who are interested in certification should pursue our graduate FLT certification program, and individuals currently employed in Connecticut with a Durational Shortage Application Permit (DSAPs) should pursue our DSAP certification program.
