how to apply
Thank you for your interest in the Honors College. The first step is to complete the SCSU undergraduate admissions application.
Who may qualify for admission to the Honors College?
- High school seniors with good academic records and solid SAT scores;
- Incoming freshmen recommended by faculty members;
- Incoming transfer students with outstanding records who have not yet met most of the all-university requirements (with permission of the director);
- Qualified students with strong interest in our program.
In January, we review the records of incoming freshmen and send them an invitation to attend an "essay day," which is held on campus. Students bring with them an assigned essay we've asked them to write, and they also write a spontaneous essay and participate in a class while on campus. These are all graded and determine the freshman Honors College class. In addition to the prepared essay, we ask for a letter of recommendation from one of the English teachers you had in 11th or 12th grade.
Essay Day is typically held on the second Saturday in February. Your application to Southern Connecticut State University should be completed by January 15th.
If you would like to receive an invitation to attend Essay Day, please send your name and mailing address (via e-mail, Honors College) and we will add you to our list.
Invitations are sent out in January.
There is no formal application form.
All students who consider enrolling in our program must have a strong academic background and be eager to make a commitment to the challenge of Honors courses. Most of our students were in the top quarter of their high school classes and earned high SAT scores. Because we are strongly committed to diversity, all serious students will be considered for admission to the Honors College.
