"ALA-accredited programs: Assuring quality, innovation, and value in library and information studies education

"The American Library Association (ALA) accredits master's programs in library and information studies across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. There are 62 ALA-accredited master's programs and 3 programs seeking initial accreditation.

"Accreditation is achieved through a review process conducted by an external review panel of practitioners and academics that verifies that the program meets the Standards for Accreditation of Master's Programs in Library and Information Studies.

"Graduating from an ALA-accredited program provides flexibility in the types of libraries and jobs you can apply for and enhances career mobility. Most employers require an ALA-accredited master's degree for most professional level positions, and some states require an ALA-accredited degree to work as a professional librarian in public or school libraries.

================================

Southern's Master of Library Science program has been accredited by the American Library Association since 1972.

The program is scheduled for a comprehensive accreditation program review in the spring of 2013. This site has been created to facilitate access to our program presentation for our students and alumni and their employers, and other constituents as well as the public at large.

In preparation for the ALA's comprehensive accreditation review, the department will develop and submit a comprehensive self-study Program Presentation (see sidebar).

Preparation for a comprehensive review is approximately a 24-month process. Pre-planning begins fall 2010.
