Materials and Services for Children
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Materials formats needed to build public and school library collections. Challenges in selecting and building collections are discussed.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The student will be able to, orally or in writing:
1. Analyze types of current material for children using accepted standards of criticism and evaluation.
2. Discuss the reviewing media, bibliographic tools and sources of materials with particular emphasis on scope, authority, accuracy and inclusiveness.
3. Read and review a large variety of current materials for children for self knowledge and use with children.
4. Display some knowledge of programming for children in different types of libraries and for special types of children.
5. Articulate a collection building philosophy and policy for various types of libraries for children and for various groups of children.

One Collection Development
· Current reviewing media
· Discuss Collection Development Policies
· Look at sources for retrospective development and evaluation
· Balance to the collection
o Diversity
o Viewpoints
· Discuss Little House on the Prairie and Birchbark House
Read:
· Birchbark House
· Little House on the Prairie
Two Brief History
· Social and political changes that effect children's literature content from the 1960's to the present
· Landmark titles from each decade, 1960s to the present
Read:
· Harriet the Spy by Fitzhugh (1960s)
Three Books for the Young
Design of a picture book and its effect on the story
· Types of illustrations
· Role of the illustrator in developing the storyline
Read at least 10 of each:
· Board books
· Alphabet books
· Counting books
· Goodnight Moon
· Black and White by David Macaulay
· Current Caldecott winners
· Non-fiction easy readers
· Current Pura Belpre winner for illustrations
· Current Theodor Seuss Geisel Award winner
· Current American Indian Youth Literature Award for illustrations
· At least one of the following (these are the K-5 titles on Google Lit Trips, which we will be looking at. There are 6-8 titles available also. If you plan on working with upper elementary or middle school, choose titles form that list to read - Google Lit Trips
· Big Anthony, His Story by Tomi DePaola
· The Yellow Balloon by Charlotte Dematons
· Paddle-to-the-Sea by Holling Clancy Holling
· Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey
· The Great Horn Spoon by Sid Fleishman
You'll need some children to read aloud to!
Four Folk Literature
· Different forms of folk literature
· Effect folk literature has on modern literature
Read at least 10 from each type of folk literature:
· Fables (10 collections)
· Folktales
· Myths or epics
You'll need children to tell a story to!
Five Poetry
· With a partner, read aloud Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices
· Any collection by:
o Jack Prelutsky
o Shel Silverstein
o Douglas Florian
o Colin McNaughton
o Richard Wilbur
More children (or same children) to read some poetry to!
Six Awards
· Read all the current Nutmeg nominees (if out-of-state, read your state award books)
Seven Fiction
Read three titles from each of the following categories:
· Historical
· Realism
· Fantasy
When reading for the above, read titles from other award winning books
o Newbery
o Coretta Scott King
o Scott O'Dell
o Current Pura Belpre winner or honor book
Also:
· two titles from the challenged list
· also be looking at iCONN and Titlewave (Baker and Taylor) to see some of their features
Discussion will also include the role of audio books
Eight Biographies and Information Books
· Any biography written by Jean Fritz
· Multiple biographies about one person
· Books from the Sibert List (winner or honor titles)
Nine Magazines for Children
· Gather ten children's magazines, we'll discuss them
Ten Programming
Eleven Internet and Censorship Issues
Internet:
· Policies
· Literature meets technology: Lit Trips
· Filtering
Read two articles each, pro and con of internet filtering for children
Select a filtering software product and be prepared to discuss it
Google Lit Trips
Censorship:
· Getting help if you need it
· Read one of the following books:
o Andrew Clements. The Landry News
o Hentoff, Nat The Day They Came to Arrest the Book
o Lasky, Kathryn. Memoirs of a Bookbat
Twelve Reference Materials and Services for Children
· Obtain print copies of children's:
o Encyclopedias
o Dictionaries
o Atlases
o Thesauruses
