TUITION EQUALIZATION Pilot

Out-of-state and international students may want to plan to take advantage of a pilot pricing strategy that will allow about a fifty-percent savings on full-time tuition for Fall 2012-Spring 2013. The pilot pricing will charge all Master of Library Science (MLS) students the same in-state tuition rates regardless of residency. Faculty passes policy on response time

Approximately 85% of our students elect to take online sections of courses with students residing in 36 states and several countries (and at least six time zones). They, likewise, expect to have online access to faculty rather than on-campus office appointments. In interpreting current contract language to this expectation, at their March 8, 2012 meeting, faculty voted on a department policy of a 48-hour email response time during business days and hours using the university's time zone. For example, a student who emails Monday morning [Eastern Time Zone] can expect a response by Wednesday morning; a student emailing Thursday morning can expect a response by Monday morning; a student emailing on a weekend can expect a response by Wednesday morning; a student emailing during holiday or vacation time can expect a response by 48 hours after the academic session or the faculty member's teaching assignment resumes. Most faculty members currently have a much quicker response time. The policy establishes when the department office would consider a response outside of acceptable expectations.

DCC Passes Proposal to Allow the Praxis II Exam to fulfill the Capstone Experience Requirement [update]

The ILS Department Curriculum Committee (DCC) has approved Praxis II Exam 0311 as the Comprehensive Exam (an optional alternative to the Special Project as the required Capstone Experience) for those in the School Media track. The proposal will go to the full faculty on September 13; if it passes, it will go to the Graduate Council for approval and implementation. If implemented, those in the School Media track can take the Praxis II Exam 0311 and, if passed, submit the scores to fulfill the Capstone Experience requirement. Students will still need to take ILS 580 (as a core required course in the MLS program); but if the Praxis II is used as the Capstone Experience, it will replace the Special Project .

[UPDATE: 10.12.11 The required majority of the faculty have approved this. It will now go to Graduate Council.]

THE TK20 ASSESSMENT SYSTEM

All ILS MLS candidates, as of Fall 2011, are required to purchase the TK20 assessment system. This will allow you to upload key assessments which demonstrate your progres and competencies as you move through your MLS program.     The key assessments occur in ILS 501, ILS 503, ILS 504, ILS 506, ILS 565, and ILS 580; therefore you must purchase TK20 prior to registering for these courses.  Some of your other professional courses (field experiences for instance) may also require TK20, so if your instructor lists this as a requirement for your course, you must purchase it for that course.  You only need purchase the system once.

For information on the system and how to purchase it and log on, go to: http://www.southernct.edu/education/tk20/

Please be advised that that following statement should appear in all ILS 501, ILS 503, ILS 504, ILS 506, ILS 565, and ILS 580 syllabi:

Planning your schedule

Each student needs to be prepared to spend 2-3 hours on coursework outside of class for every hour in class.

For a 3-credit course this means you need to plan on 6-9 hours per week outside of the expected 3 hours in class.

Student Access to online courses after the semester ends

Student access to old courses
January 24, 2011 12:36 PM

Recent interpretations of the Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization Act of 2002, known as the TEACH Act, require the Teaching and Learning Technologies Group to limit access to copyrighted content within eLearning Vista. The day after grades are due in Banner, students will not have access to course materials. Making courses unavailable to students is a divisional setting within eLearning Vista and will be applied to all courses.

Should a student(s) continue to need to access  course content after this time, the professor can override that setting for his/her section. Contact your course professor if you need access to a course after grades are due in Banner, contact our course professor.

This policy change will be effective immediately and begin with Fall 2010 courses.
