Congratulations

on your acceptance to a program in the Department of Information and Library Science!

There are a number of steps you need to complete in order to confirm your place in the entering group of students.

  • Undergraduates should refer to the Next Steps bulletin, beginning by finalizing your admission. (Please check the Current Students link for additional information)
  • Graduate students need to complete a Planned Program of study, which must be filed with and approved by the Graduate School before you can be matriculated into a graduate program. This must be done in a timely manner or the offer of admission will expire. (Please check the Current Students link for additional information)

Each student should refer to Get and Stay Connected (purple section, begins on page 6) for information on activating your MySCSU email account and using BannerWeb to access your academic records, student accounts, and financial aid account, and to register for classes.

Each student who is not a declared online-only student (see page two of MLS Planned Program for declaration statement and signature) needs to submit the required health information and obtain a student ID.

Before you drive to campus, be sure to review parking regulations. All vehicles operated or parked on campus at any time must properly display an SCSU parking decal. Vehicle owners and operators must register their vehicles at the University Police Department (located in the Granoff Student Health Center, Telephone: (203) 392-5375.). Persons seeking a decal must present, at the time of application, a current, valid operator's license and a current, valid vehicle registration. Students must also present their class schedule as proof of their registration.

Before classes begin, you may wish to contact various campus services to discuss any special needs or concerns you have. Any student who needs special accommodations needs to register with the Disability Resources Office (see link below); online-only students may complete the intake interview over the phone (please contact the DRO for additional information).

Before classes begin you will want to become familiar with Buley Library and its resources. You might want to begin with a walking tour of the library or take a virtual tour. The Online Tutorial is designed to teach Connecticut State University students fundamental information skills to help them be more successful in their academic careers. Students may also schedule a one-on-one session to learn how to use Buley Library resources. Be sure to read about the Library PIN and Off Campus Access to Buley's resources. Also very useful are the off-campus troubleshooting tips if you have trouble with off-campus access.

Buley Library maintains services for distance or online students. Rebecca Hedreen is the Distance Education Librarian and will assist distance or online students with their special access needs. (Be sure to see Frequently Asked Questions and Rebecca's Weblog.)

Textbooks

Faculty generally place textbook orders directly with the university bookstore. To find the textbooks that have been ordered for your classes, use the interactive Buy Your Textbooks On-Line Today! from Southern's Bookstore. Simply: 1) Select the Term; 2) Select the Department (ILS); 3) Select the Course; 4) Select the Section; 5) Click Continue; 6) Click Add Course to repeat until all your courses appear in the Review Your Courses window; then 7) Click View Textbook List. You will see the textbooks ordered by your professors, price for a new copy and price for a used copy if purchased through the university bookstore.

If your course is not listed, contact the professor for the list of required and recommended texts.
