In an Interdepartmental Memorandum of April 16, 2010, Dr. Selase Williams, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, announced the Organizational Reassignment of the Department of Information and Library Science to the School of Education.
ILS WAS reassigned to the School of Education effective July 1, 2010
Connecticut is one of 46 states facing budget shortfall. With its close connection to Wall Street, Connecticut has been severely affected by the economic downturn. Governor M. Jodi Rell in her budget address for 2010-2011 declared that all citizens in Connecticut would share the pain: "There is pain and sacrifice in this budget, but it is shared pain and sacrifice. We are in this struggle together, and we will need to work together, to lead together, in deed as well as in word" (http://www.senatedems.state.ct.us/PDF/Duff-0903-BudgetForum.pdf).
In terms of the university, a retirement incentive was initiated along with a hiring freeze; faculty and staff gave back benefits and took a cut in pay in the form of furlough days and reduced salary increases. In order to realize an imposed 10 percent cut in administrative confidential level staff, the School of Communication, Information and Library Science is to be dissolved and its four departments (computer science, communication, journalism, and information and library science) moved to other units within the university.
This is a organizational reassignment. The number of faculty lines assigned to the department will remain the same, as will the number of staff positions assigned to the department. The budget will remain the same as it is currently, subject to proportionate reductions that may take place in the future as a consequence of the university being required to reduce its overall operating budget.
The university is currently searching for a Dean of the School of Education. This gives the ILS faculty the opportunity to attend the interviews to get to know the candidates and to be able to provide input to the search committee, which is chaired by Vice President Ron Herron. Dr. Sharon Misasi is currently serving as Interim Dean, School of Education.
ILS looks forward to opportunities the relocation presents. Once the new dean is appointed, the department will meet with the dean to discuss more long-term plans for the department and collaborations between the various departments in the School.
Like so many of our students, alumni, and colleagues in the profession, ILS is seizing upon these times of financial challenges to reassess our strategic goals to better fit the new climate to which we all are adapting.
Very soon ILS will begin to solicit input from our constitutients on their changing needs. Please feel free to send your ideas or your name to participate in focus groups to the department chairperson, Dr. Chang Suk Kim at kimc1@southernct.edu.
