[REVISION OF ORIGINAL DOCUMENT ONE YEAR AFTER PUBLICATION]

Site Map for ILS Department Website

DEVELOPMENT URL: http://www.southernct.edu/development/ils/
PUBLISHED URL (mid-summer 2007): http://www.southernct.edu/ils/

ASSESSMENT ONE-YEAR OUT (mid-summer 2008): The anticipated year-round support position for this site did not materialize. Given the failed attempts at putting someone in place and the current  hiring freeze and budget climate, it is anticipated that no support position will be in place in the coming year. The original site was planned as-if a fixed publication and it appears at least for the immediate future that this is the better plan to continue in updating the site at this time.

UPDATED: June-July 2008 (primarily to conform with 2008-2009 undergraduate and graduate catalogs, check links, and update information)

FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS, provided appropriate year-round webmaster is in place:
Visitor's Feedback page (linked to Contact Us)
Assessment arm with tools (surveys) and periodic reports
Recruitment arm with guides, contacts, event announcements

PHILOSOPHY OF WEBSITE

The purpose of the ILS Website is to bring together information about the ILS programs (undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education/life-long learning) and the ILS profession; and to organize them to facilitate logical/commonsense navigation for prospective, current, and graduated students of the ILS programs.

The initial goal is to collect, organize and "publish" information for prospective, current, and graduated ILS students. Once the site is well-established from an information and management/maintenance perspective, more dynamic elements may be added, for example weekly newsletters from the department and dean, a semi-annual or quarterly alumni news, student interactive communication center.

Where information is available and maintained at another location on the university or other website in an accessible package (information unit) that reasonably meets the needs of the ILS site, we will point to that information rather than repeat and maintain it.

Where information is available at another location but is not directly accessible in a neat package (for example it is contained within or distributed throughout a dense webpage), we will summarize the information of interest and cite the source (including, generally with a link to the source of that summarized information).

The "two click" rule will be the guideline for designing and updating the navigation system: Once on the homepage, we want all information/links to sources to be no more than two clicks away.

In general, the site should be designed so that information maintained by the department has a single home (that is, is found at one location on the website. This will facilitate updating and consistency of information.

INDIVIDUAL FACULTY WEB PAGES / WEBSITES

In order to ensure an equality of minimal web presence for all fulltime faculty, a standard page design has been created for the purpose of holding a Curriculum Vita, or at least the portion listing research and publications. It is the responsibility of each faculty member to provide accurate updates annually or semi-annually to the department webmaster. At a future time after the site is well-established from an information and management/maintenance perspective, a standard website design may be offered to faculty who do not maintain their own personal websites to support classes they teach for ILS (such as containing course descriptions, texts, syllabi).

REVIEW AND UPDATE SCHEDULE

Annual review of the purpose and philosophy of the website should be conducted and the website assessed, through user satisfaction data, for it ability to meet established user outcomes.

The bulk of routine maintenance of the department website can be planned and should take place in late spring through early summer. Some pages will require review and updating prior to beginning of each semester. Key information (such as contact information and policies) will require immediate updating as these changes happen.

The main home page and most sub-home pages contain narrative information on the history of the department or profession, an overview of the programs, profession or field. Together these can be viewed as a package that presents an image of the program, the profession, and the program's place in the profession. Changes in the field, the program, or shifting emphasis on portions of the program may dictate the general kind of information distributed on these pages as well as the tone. Likewise, the vehicle or mode of presentation could shift among narration or bulleted lists or pictures, or use of audio or video shorts. It would be expected that these pages would not change more than annually and a good bit of thought would go into them, perhaps reflecting elements of informational brochures, tri-folds, and giveaways to support the current "theme." These pages include:
    Home [.../ils/]
    About the i-Profession [.../ils/aboutthelisprofession/]
    Admissions [.../ils/admissions/]
    Learning & Teaching [.../ils/programs/]
    Prospective Students [.../ils/prospectivestudents/]
    Alumni & Friends [.../ils/alumnifriends/]

Three types of information are, for the most part, generated by ILS and need to be updated on the website immediately upon availability: faculty credentials and contact information (as soon as changed), department policies (as soon as approved and implemented), undergraduate and graduate catalog entries (each spring after final copy has been approved and submitted). Faculty credentials and contact information is located at:
    Faculty & Staff [.../ils/facultyandstaff/]
    Contact Us [.../ils/contactus/]
Department policies are located at:
    ILS Policies [.../ils/currentstudents/ilspolicies/]
Undergraduate and Graduate catalog entries are divided among these pages:
    Undergraduate Admissions
        [.../ils/admissions/undergraduateadmissions/]
    Graduate Admissions [.../ils/admissions/graduateadmissions/]
    Undergraduate Programs [.../ils/programs/undergraduate/]
    Master's level [..../ils/education/graduate/mls/]
    Sixth Year Program [.../ils/programs/graduate/artoforaltradition/]
    Course Descriptions [.../ils/programs/graduate/viewallcourses/]
Other department documents are located at:
    Course Rotation [.../ils/courseoffering/courserotation/]
    MLS program [.../ils/mlsprogram/]
    Sixth Year program [.../ils/sixthyearprogram/]

Faculty should be reminded in early spring to submit updates to CVs maintained on the ILS department website by the department webmaster.
