Institute on Assessment of Autism Spectrum Disorders

The departments of Special Education/Reading and Communication Disorders at Southern Connecticut State University, in collaboration with the Yale University Child Study Center, will be offering a 3-credit summer institute on Evaluation and Assessment of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.  The purpose of the institute is to increase participants' ability to determine educational eligibility and assess the educational needs of individuals on the autism spectrum.

Dates:
The institute will run from June 16 to June 26, 2008
Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location:
Southern Connecticut State University, Davis Hall, Room 101

Topics:
Intensive presentations and activities by selected experts in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders will be offered.  Each day will consist of two, half-day sessions.  Topics will include: Connecticut State Guidelines and Legal Issues Related to Assessment; History of ASD and Lifetime Issues; Speech and Language Assessment; Psychological Assessment; Diagnostic Screening Instruments; Comprehensive Educational Evaluation; Social Skill Assessment/Models; Family Support and Inclusion in the Assessment Process; Integrating Assessment Information into Educational Programming; Evidence-Based Program Practices.

Cost:
This 3-credit course will cost approximately $1,350 per person. 
CEUs will be available upon request.

Note: Course may be taken as an audit, the cost will be the same, and students must register.

Participants:
Preference will be given to individuals from districts who sign up in teams of two or more and who represent a variety of disciplines (special education teacher, school psychologist, speech/language pathologist, social worker, etc.).  Target audience will include students enrolled in the ASD and Developmental Disabilities concentration master's degree program at Southern; individuals with previous and current experience in working with individuals with ASD in educational settings or who have completed SED 520; and parents of individuals with ASD.

If you are a Southern student and have an ID number, you may register online.

If you are new to Southern, or do not currently attend Southern, go to the university's home page: www.Southernct.edu

First-time students:  Go to Southern's's home page, click on Academics (at the top), then click on Registrar's Office (on the right-hand side of the page, then click on Quick Admit form for non-SCSU students.  Complete the form, then click   on submit.  You will receive an auto email telling you that you will receive an ID number within 3 business days.  Then you may register online

Note: If your district is paying the tuition for you, please notify Anthony Mauro in the Bursar's office.  His email is: mauroa1@southernct.edu  (It is the number 1 -- one -- not the letter "L" in Mr. Mauro's email.)
