"How do I Apply and Follow up?"

  1. students abroadCheck out the basic requirements for semester- or year-long study abroad. Undergraduates must have completed at least 30 credits at SCSU and hold a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75. No more than 90 undergraduate credits may be transferred into SCSU. Graduate students must be approved by their program adviser, department, and the School of Graduate Studies prior to proceeding further.
  2. Watch the calendar. May 1st is the application deadline for the following spring semester, and December 1st is the application deadline for the following fall semester and non-SCSU summer study-abroad program. Slight adjustments to the deadlines may be possible. (SCSU summer study-abroad programs have deadlines determined by the individual program directors.) Be sure to submit all documents, forms, and fees on time. Otherwise, we cannot register you for study abroad nor allow you to participate in the study-abroad program as an SCSU student.
  3. Meet with your academic adviser. You'll want to discuss and plan the academic component of your study abroad, deciding together on the courses you'll take. Your advisor will have to approve your plans and return the green form, the  "Confidential Advisor Response Sheet," to Dr. Olson in the International Office, Engleman B129.
  4. Meet with your financial aid officer. You'll want to review your specific study-abroad budget, which may allow a revision of your current financial aid package. Be sure to complete and submit your FAFSA early to avoid delays in any financial aid awards or disbursements. Later on, you also may elect to submit a study-abroad budget to Dr. Olson, who will forward it to the Financial Aid Office.
  5. Gather information. Attend one of the many information sessions hosted by the International Programs Office. Dates for these sessions are posted on this site, in Engleman B129, or contact Mark Tortora at (203) 392-6940 or tortoram1@southernct.edu. You will learn about the sites abroad and the application process. Also, see our website: www.southernct.edu/internationalprograms/
  6. Make an appointment for an interview with the Study Abroad Coordinator. Contact Dr. Linda Olson in Engleman B129, at (203) 392-6975 or olsonl1@southernct.edu. She will review your appropriateness as a study-abroad candidate. Then, she will help you with your program and course choices, ensuring your smooth passage through the study-abroad process. SCSU requires significant paperwork and visits to several offices at this point as well as clearance from your physician, so you need to plan for time to accomplish these tasks.
  7. You will be enrolled in either IDS 300 or 301. Once all of your paperwork is complete, Dr. Olson will place you in one of these classes. Also, at this point, you may submit your study-abroad budget to her, and she'll forward it to the Office of Financial Aid.
  8. Pack your bags and go. Enjoy living and studying abroad! Keep in touch; so will we!
