Students enrolled in Southern's Rome 2012 Program will find themselves immersed in Roman culture, both ancient and modern. We will staying in apartments in the student neighborhood of San Lorenzo, just minutes from the 1st-century Aurelian walls, the Coliseum, and the Roman Forum. In addition to classes, we will also visit some of the area's greatest archaeological, architectural, and cultural sites: the Vatican Museums, the ancient port city of Ostia Antica, the catacombs of San Callisto, the Pantheon, the Capuchin Crypt, as well as dozens of churches.
During the evenings, students may dine at any of San Lorenzo's many cafes, and explore the vibrant night life of this exciting neighborhood.
We will also be taking an overnight trip to Florence, where we will tour the world-famous Uffizi Gallery, visit the Duomo and the nearby Bapistry, and explore the world's oldest continuously-operated "school for foundlings", the Ospedale degli Innocenti.
General Information
Students must enroll in the following two courses, which are both electives in the English major/minor.
LIT 488: The Classical Tradition in Western Literature. 3 credits.
LIT 302: Literature of the New Testament. 3 credits.
Requirements
Students must complete Southern's risk management paperowrk before travelling abroad. Students must also be 18 years old or older, have a record free of diciplinary problems, and have a valid passport.
Accommodations
Students stay in apartments in the university neighborhood of San Lorenzo, a twenty-minute walk from the center of Rome. Students stay one night in a hotel in Florence.
Dietary preferences and restrictions should be explained in detail to trip director at the time of registration.
Program Fees: $2460.00
This program fee includes airfare, room and board, transportation to and from the airport, and transportation in Italy. It also includes, three group lunches and dinners and enterance fees to all museums and historical sites.
The fee does not include Southern's tuition and registration fee, personal expenses, touring, books, laundy, snacks, medical and living expenses, or any additional expenses that alter the itinerary or arrangements. A non-refundable deposit of $500 made out to 'Southern Connecticut State University' is due upon acceptance into the program. This guarantees your participation in the program and reserves your room. A second payment of $980 is due on March 12, 2012. The remainder of the balance ($980) is due no later than May 1, 2012.
Program fees are based upon historical program costs and current rates of exchange. Extreme fluctuation in exchange rates or boarding costs in Italy may result in additional fees being charged. The University reserves the right to change the itinerary of proposed trips if needed to control the cost of the overall trip. In the event that additional fees exceed the current costs by more than 20%, the student may choose to drop the course and receive a refund of all funds recoverable by the university. Fees will be frozen on May 1, 2012 and after May 1 there will be no refunds. The program does not accept responsibility for personal property, which must be insured separately if desired, and reserves the right to make changes required by circumstances. In the event of an off-campus course cancellation, students will be refunded all the fees recovered from the program providers (airlines, hotels, etc.). The SCSU IE office will aggressively negotiate for refunds. The university reserves the right to cancel this program in the event that student safety abroad is in question.
Cancellation insurance is strongly advised. In the event of a cancellation, tuition refunds will be given in accordance with the policy of the university. Copies of the cancellation policy, required releases, and medical statement may be obtained from the SPAR office.
This program accepts no responsibility for personal property, which must be insured separately if so desired; in particular, students are urged not to bring valuables with them. The program reserves the right to make changes required by circumstances.
