                        Department of World Languages

                                                    Presents:

The 2013 International Field Study in

                                  Spain

                   June 29 - July 28, 2013

Salamanca

The great university city of Salamanca is Spain's finest showcase of Renaissance and Plateresque architecture.  Founded as an Iberian settlement in pre-Roman times, the city fell to Hannibal in 217BC. Preeminent among its artists and master craftsmen of later years were the Churriguerra brothers.  Their work may be seen in many of Salamanca's golden stone buildings, notably in the Plaza Mayor.  Other major sights are the two cathedrals and the 13th-century university, one of Europe's oldest and most distinguished.

Segovia

Segovia's aqueduct is of the greatest surviving monuments in Roman engineering. This aqueduct stretches from the walls of the old town to the edges of the Sierra de Guadarrama.

Galicia

An area with a splendid prehistoric, Roman, and Visigoth past, the autonomous community of Galicia in Northwest Spain offers unique history and landmarks around every corner.  Galicia bosts dense forests, mountains, cliffs, rivers, and expansive coastlines.  In Galicia, one can experience the history of the past few thousand years from prehistoric burial sites and petroglyphs to modern cultural revolution, literature, and art.  A diverse landscape, Galicia offers great beauty, great food, and great learning experiences for all.

Accommodations

Students may choose to stay in a residence hall or live with a family (double occupancy).  Single rooms are available upon request for an additional $150 payable in Spain.  Three meals per day will be provided by your host family or the dining hall.  Dietary preferences and restrictions should be explained in detail to trip Director at the time of registration.

Program Fees: $4350

Fees include room and board (three meals), airfare, guided  instructional  excursions (with two meals: breakfast and dinner), 3 credits tuition at the Colegio de Espana, Language Practicum, and entrance to all cultural activities sponsored by the program including a 1-day trip to Segovia and a 3-day trip to Galicia.

A non-refundable deposit of $500 made out to 'SCSU-Program in Spain' is due upon submitting an application. This guarantees your participation in the program and reserves your room.  A second payment of $1925 is due on March 1, 2013.  The remainder of the balance ($1925) is due no later than May 1, 2013.

Southern's tuition and the summer registration fee are not included in the program fees.  Each student must register for 3 credits at SCSU.  The other 3 credits from the Colegio de España will be transferred upon completion of the  program. The program fee does not include personal expenses, touring, books, laundry, snacks, medical and living expenses, or any additional expenses that alter itinerary or arrangements. Students are encouraged to  consult with the Financial Aid Office to determine eligibility.

Program fees are based upon historical program costs and current rates of exchange. Extreme fluctuation in exchange rates or boarding costs in Italy may result in additional fees being charged. The University reserves the right to change the itinerary of proposed trips if needed to control the cost of the overall trip.  In the event that additional fees exceed the current costs by more than 20%, the student may choose to drop the course and receive a refund of all funds recoverable by the university. Fees will be frozen on May 1, 2013 and after May 1 there will be no refunds. The program does not accept responsibility for personal property, which must be insured separately if desired, and reserves the right to make changes required by circumstances. In particular, students are urged not to bring valuables with them.

Office of international Education Cancellation Policy

Currently, all courses abroad for the academic year are expected to operate. Southern Connecticut State University's Office of International Education (SCSU-OIE) will monitor world events and make any change to this decision on an individual course basis any time between now and the departure dates.

If Southern Connecticut State University cancels an off-campus course, students will be refunded their deposits and all monies the university is able to recover from program providers. The SCSU-OIE office will aggressively negotiate with providers for the refunds.

If a student withdraws from an off-campus course at any time between now and the departure date, the student will forfeit his/her deposit but will be refunded all other recoverable amounts. In the event the price of the trip rises more than 20%, the student may withdraw and receive both recoverable funds and deposit.

Students who must cancel their participation in a course abroad program must do so in writing to Dr. Erin Heidkamp, Interim Director of the Office of International Education.

The Office of International Education will work to delay payment to providers on costs for course abroad programs as long as possible and request clearly-stated refund policies from all providers for all programs prior to payments. Students who wish to purchase cancellation insurance should contact their insurance provider.

If Southern Connecticut State University cancels an off-campus course, the staff of SCSU-OIE will work with individual course abroad faculty members in adapting their course, when possible, for the Southern Connecticut State University campus. This is understood to be an emergency procedure in place as a result of unusual or unforeseen world events. If an off-campus course cannot be adapted to the on-campus

setting, the faculty member will work to develop an alternative on-campus course for the students enrolled. If this is possible, efforts will be made to enroll students in existing on-campus courses.
