The Southern Connecticut State University
Art department and Department of World
languages and literature Presents:
The 2013 International Field Study in
Paris
Get
ready for the educational experience of a lifetime in one of the
world's most beautiful cities! Southern's program in Paris is designed
so that you can study and earn credit for courses while learning and
living in the City of Light. We will introduce you to many exciting
dimensions of the city both in and out of the classroom. Each course in
the program takes full advantage of the rich environment of the city.
Paris itself is our classroom: whether your focus is art or cinema, you
will discover your subject firsthand. At the same time, you will also
have the opportunity to learn about the city's many neighborhoods,
monuments, events, and even its food. Paris is our focus, but we will
also travel outside the city to visit additional sites. In the past
our destinations have included the royal palace of Versailles and
Monet's Garden at Giverny.
Available Courses
ART 225 Creative Drawing.
Prof. Thuan Vu
This course will focus on the creation of a visual travel journal.
Using pencil, charcoal, pastel, and watercolor, the journal will record
how the student experiences the artistic history of Paris. Subjects
will include French paintings, sculpture, architecture, decorative
arts, and landscape. Specific assignments will address both formal
drawing concerns (composition, scale, proportion, value, light, and
volume) and conceptual issues (What does it mean to work on site? In a
foreign country? And how does this influence what and how I draw?).
Drawing sessions in the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay, the Luxembourg
Gardens, and various sites around Paris, will be supplemented with
class meetings for technical demonstrations and critiques. Students
will provide their own art supplies, which may be brought with them or
purchased in Paris.
ART 324 City of Light: 2000 Years of Art and Architecture in Paris.
Dr. Camille Serchuk
This course will examine the architectural, artistic and urban
development of Paris from the city's origins to the present day. While
following a chronological survey of the city's art and architecture and
urban design, we will also consider the importance of the French kings
and their patronage to Parisian art and architecture, as well as the
effects of war on the city, the development of Paris as a capital city
and center of power and commerce, and the role it played in defining
the artistic avant-garde. Walking tours of neighborhoods will
alternate with trips to museums such as the Louvre and the Pompidou
Center and visits to monuments such as the Arc de Triomphe and the
Place des Vosges.
ART 398: French Gothic Cathedrals (Prof. Camille Serchuk)
FRE 206/306/506: Advanced French Culture and
Language Practice in
France; French Cinema: How to Read French Films
Prof. Françoise Ehrmann
This course will have a double focus, cultural and interpretative. We
will investigate the history of French cinema, its production as well
as its diffusion, from cinémas d'art et d'essai, the "palaces" of the
twenties, to the modern technology of the Géode. We will examine its
importance in French culture, by visiting the new Rue du Cinéma, le
Forum des Images, and the Cinémathèque. Depending on the programming
available in July, we will watch a variety of different styles of
French films, and will discuss how does one "reads" films, and what
interpretative models may prove the most useful in understanding them.
Students must budget additional monies of approximately $120 for film
admissions and duplicating expenses.
ReQuirements
Requirements
and prerequisites are listed in the undergraduate and graduate

Office of international Education Cancellation Policy
Currently, all courses abroad for the academic year are expected to operate. Southern Connecticut State University's Office of International Education (SCSU-OIE) will monitor world events and make any change to this decision on an individual course basis any time between now and the departure dates.
If Southern Connecticut State University cancels an off-campus course, students will be refunded their deposits and all monies the university is able to recover from program providers. The SCSU-OIE office will aggressively negotiate with providers for the refunds.
If a student withdraws from an off-campus course at any time between now and the departure date, the student will forfeit his/her deposit but will be refunded all other recoverable amounts. In the event the price of the trip rises more than 20%, the student may withdraw and receive both recoverable funds and deposit.
Students who must cancel their participation in a course abroad program must do so in writing to Dr. Erin Heidkamp, Interim Director of the Office of International Education.
The Office of International Education will work to delay payment to providers on costs for course abroad programs as long as possible and request clearly-stated refund policies from all providers for all programs prior to payments. Students who wish to purchase cancellation insurance should contact their insurance provider.
If Southern Connecticut State University cancels an off-campus course, the staff of SCSU-OIE will work with individual course abroad faculty members in adapting their course, when possible, for the Southern Connecticut State University campus. This is understood to be an emergency procedure in place as a result of unusual or unforeseen world events. If an off-campus course cannot be adapted to the on-campus
setting, the faculty member will work to develop an alternative on-campus course for the students enrolled. If this is possible, efforts will be made to enroll students in existing on-campus courses.
For information regarding financial aid, please contact Ms. Gloria Lee at (203) 392-5445.
*Deposits will be refunded in full if this application is rejected by the program Director.
