Memories of SCSU

I was one of the few on-campus students who stayed at school on the weekends. One Friday night the small group of us that was left in Neff Hall decided to pull a prank. We took police tape, chalk, and ketchup to the pedestrian bridge and created a crime scene complete with chalk outlines, police tape blocking the scene and "blood." We also found a "sidewalk closed" construction sign and placed it at the foot of the bridge. It turns out that the next day, unbeknownst to us, was Open House at the college, where prospective freshmen and their families took tours of the campus. Many more people saw our work than we had prepared for. Too bad we weren't there to see the initial reaction before they realized it was a joke. You know how dangerous New Haven can be, and suburban parents' minds tend to wander. As an interesting side note, the Crescent Players production of "Othello" was coming up, and from what I hear they got the blame for their so-called guerilla marketing of the production. Only the six of us (all Honors College students) who were there know the truth.


Most interesting thing that's happened to you since graduation

My band Done Mama Proud has played with Blue Oyster Cult and the Marshall Tucker Band at Toad's Place.


Life Since Graduation

I've stayed pretty local. Right after college (1998) I got a job as assistant editor for Internet.com in Westport. Then I moved in 2000 to a consulting company in Stamford (now Norwalk) called Peppers & Rogers Group. For a while I had a monthly column in the Connecticut Post, focusing on the twenty-something perspective. I also work as the Webmaster for the Connecticut SPJ Web site. The music side of my life has gone into full gear in the last few years. I play bass guitar in two bands -- a pop/rock band called Saffron and a blues-rock band called Done Mama Proud. We play throughout Connecticut, and DMP has been nominated for the Hartford Grand Band Slam Awards for best rock band two years' running. Saffron is busy recording a new album, which should be out in early 2005.


Other comments

The support and encouragement the staff in the JRN department is tremendous. The skills I learned there have really given me an edge in the field. In my opinion it's one of the top programs in the country. And the opportunities around to develop my skills -- internships, on-campus media, freelance work -- there's so much there if you're willing to take advantage of it.
