Job description

Develop and manage processes used for external communications, including grassroots/advocacy process and tools, corporate emergency/crisis communications plans, training and media center; manage department internal Web content and processes; coordinate corporate issues database for multiple business units.

Family

Married Mark Morris (SCSC 1982, who is a senior applications analyst for the Red Cross); two sons, Dan (22, working full time and finally out of the house) and Nate (19, drama student at UNC-Greensboro)

Memories of SCSU

News writing classes with Robin Glassman; avoiding Jane Hamilton-Merrit's Ethics of Journalism class; making great friends associated with the swim team; Octoberfest(s) in the lower parking lot; singing along with Ray Boston at the Keg house; meeting my husband at Johnny's on 25 cent beer/hot dog night; three of us stuffed in a room in Farnham Hall in freshman year; Sunday night masses in the college pub with Father Sullivan.

Most interesting thing that's happened to you since graduation

The culture change in moving from New Haven and New England to the South. We're not just called Yankees here, but "damn Yankees" because we've stayed! We're now Southerners by education and by geography!

Life Since Graduation

Married, had children and worked part time for several years then went to work full time in the marketing department at GE Capital in Charlotte. Left GE and have worked at Duke Power (now Duke Energy) since 1990. Both Mark and I have been very involved in our children's activities and community activities -- school, Boy Scouts, local arts, Red Cross, Girl Scouts -- and served on the boards of several non-profit agencies. Traveled with Mark's previous job as a software training manager to Europe, Australia, and Jamaica. We spend most weekends, and hope to retire to, our vacation home on a lake that abuts the Uhwarrie National Forest in North Carolina.

Other comments

I am very proud of the education and experience I received at SCSU; the discipline and high expectations of the journalism department provided me with a strong skill set for effectively organizing thoughts and writing clearly. The instructors and, especially, Robin Glassman were always open, engaged, and interested in students who sought success. I continue to be impressed with the career paths of my fellow journalism classmates have followed when I see their work appear or read about them in the alumni newsletter.
