journalism internships

Valuable instruction comes from the classroom, but supplementing that is the invaluable experience journalism majors receive from working in the field as  interns. The internship has a two-fold effect:

  1. It reinforces students' desire to continue in the field; or
  2. It helps them determine whether journalism is the right field for them, or perhaps another aspect of journalism.

student at computerJournalism majors can choose from a variety of internships in the broadcast, print, and public relations arenas. Journalism interns work on newspapers, TV stations, the larger radio stations, and on many magazines in the state, as well as in agencies concerned with public relations. The placement list includes news outlets and public relations firms from all around the country. When students request placement in news organizations, we are almost always able to make arrangements.

These placements provide professional and practical experience and a chance to make important career contacts. Journalism students are interested in many types of internships involving reporting, writing, and editing; photography; graphics; and audio-video news production.

Internship Requirements and Facts

  • B.S. students are required to have six to nine credits in internships.
  • B.A. students are advised to have at least three credits, even though internships are not required.
  • Credits for one semester may range from one to nine.
  • For each credit earned, students work 50 hours during the semester.
  • Most journalism majors have at least two internships during their junior and senior years.

Applying for an Internship

To apply for an internship, students should meet with the department chairman or the faculty adviser to discuss interests and qualifications, as well as to consider the availability of internships. With our help, you will prepare a resume to submit to prospective supervisors and arrange for interviews. The employers make the final decision in selecting interns. You will arrange your internship schedules with your supervisors and establish dates for the beginning and the end of the internship and for holidays.

Evaluation

Students will be assigned to a faculty adviser, who will follow the progress of the internship and help with any problems. You will submit weekly logs of your activities to your campus adviser and attend monthly intern meetings on campus. Your job supervisor also evaluates your progress throughout the semester.

Intern Abroad Opportunities through The Washington Center

The Washington Center would like to thank you for your support in making students aware of opportunities that we offer, whether you are a new contact or have been working with us for years.

We have two exciting programs we'd love for you to publicize on campus--both of which are in their second year. One is based in London , England and the other in Monterrey , Mexico . Both combine two sought-after experiences--study abroad and a substantive, tailored internship.

The programs each begin with a ten-day seminar in Washington , D.C. , including an orientation, academic work, lectures, site visits, and other programming. The students then fly to their respective countries, where they complete a full-time internship, academic course (or courses), and experience a new culture.

Please forward on the email below to your students and feel free to contact us with any questions about these, or any of our D.C. internship programs. You may also be interested in visiting each program's website:   www.twc.edu/students/london.shtml
