Goals and Outcomes for Liberal Studies
Track 1: General Studies
Goals
To provide a responsive, flexible broad program of study in the liberal arts for non-traditional students (ie. returning students after an appreciable time away and students without a structured program of study [or major] to successfully pursue an undergraduate degree.
To help students to integrate previous knowledge in their pursuit of lifelong learning.
Outcome Measures
To complete a capstone experience course that requires an individualized proficiency demonstration and integrates newly acquired liberal studies knowledge with more specific fieldwork knowledge (e.g. from an internship or community service project). The capstone course will also serve as a shell for academic and career advisement.
Track 2: Interdisciplinary Content Major for Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education candidates
Goals
To increase beginning PK-6 teachers' content knowledge in order to facilitate their development of pedagogical content knowledge.
Outcome Measures
Meet professional teaching standards, as defined by NSTA, NCTE/IRA, NCTM and NCSS.
Capstone Project
E-portfolio will contain all key course assessments in addition to an in-depth reflection piece that synthesizes learning and makes applications to the field.
Track 3: Interdisciplinary Studies
Goals
Students will develop an interdisciplinary approach to thinking and will be able to fuse perspectives from at least two but up to three distinct disciplines.
Students will be able to understand the relationships between the chosen minors and global issues.
Outcome Measures:
1) Students will submit a rationale for pursuing a Liberal Studies degree highlighting why they chose their specific minors.
2) Capstone Experience:
Students will take a capstone course and will either: 1, write an interdisciplinary research paper or 2, complete an interdisciplinary project (a video or documentary, etc.) based on some field experience (an interdisciplinary internship, for instance).
