Learning OUTCOMES and OBJECTIVES

 

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPY MASTER DEGREE PROGRAM

Upon successful completion of an appropriate planned program within MFT, each graduate will demonstrate:

  • A thorough understanding of systemic theories.

  • Proficiency in the skilled implementation of systemic interventions in a variety of clinical settings.

  • The ability to apply all aspects of case management including assessment, treatment planning, recordkeeping, report writing, and, interaction with a variety of referring agents.

  • A strong and clear sense of self and an articulated personal model of therapy upon which to base their interventions, in which the self is understood as crucial in the delivery of effective therapy.

  • The ability to apply the standards of legal and ethical professional conduct and their proper application to the practice of psychotherapy.

  • The ability to establish a professional identity through participation in professional activities, associations and organizations that facilitate the process of integration in the field of marriage and family therapy.

  • The critical thinking and evaluation skills necessary to assess the latest advances in marriage and family therapy research and receive the ongoing professional enrichment and continued skill development of applying that research to their clinical practice.

  • Knowledge and understanding of life span development and its implications in therapeutic practice.

  • Effective individual and group therapy and consultation skills.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the basic elements of research design, implementation, and analysis, including the ability to conduct research and program evaluation.

  • Awareness, knowledge, and understanding of the broad definition of diversity including; racial/ethnic, gender and gender identification, sexual orientation, disability, immigrant status, socio-economic status, religion and spirituality and world views in a diverse society, and demonstrated effective cross cultural psychotherapy and assessment skills.

  • An integrated level of knowledge gained in course work with the ability to apply such knowledge to school or clinical mental health practice.
