INTERNSHIP

mft studentThe second clinical experience is done in an agency setting where the student can proceed toward the attainment of the total of 200 hours of direct client contact with couples and families within at least 12 consecutive calendar months - this does not include the 50 hours of couple/family therapy required in the clinic. In order to meet the overall total number of clinical hours required by both the State of Connecticut and AAMFT, the student should expect to add 250 hours of individual and group work, which necessitates a commitment of 15-20 hours a week at a placement site at the same time the student is seeing cases at the family clinic on campus.

The department maintains a list of appropriate internship sites, those that have a Connecticut-licensed MFT and an AAMFT-approved supervisor, and where there is an assurance that 50 percent of supervision can be done in a direct manner (live observation, videotapes, or audiotapes).

In addition, the intern is free to utilize other sites that meet all requirements. All supervision, which must consist of at least one hour of individual supervision per week, must be performed by an individual who is paid by the agency. In addition to agency involvement and agency supervision, the intern will be required to have one hour of group supervision at the university each week, as well as other university assignments as outlined below.

All interns are required to complete written evaluations of the supervision experience and to evaluate the field placement site. Evaluations of the intern's work by the field placement supervisor must be submitted prior to completion. In the last semester of the intern year, students must complete a written paper answering the following questions clearly and concisely:

  1. How do you believe change takes place with couples and families in treatment?
  2. What is your task as a systems therapist?
  3. What are your particular skills?
  4. How are you systemic in working with individuals?

For each of these questions, give examples from your casework with clients to support your response. Whenever possible use raw data for your illustrations.
