mathematics placement exams
Format
The new math placement test is an adaptive, computer-based test called Accuplacer.
Schedule
The schedule for placement exams is maintained on the university's main placement page. You must register for the exam at the main placement page to reserve a spot.
Preparation
You should review before taking the exam. Some sample questions and answers are available as an MS Word document.
There are several sources of review materials available on Southern's campus:
- Books on topics ranging from Elementary Algebra to Precalculus are on reserve at the library. (The Reserve Desk is on the first floor. Buley Library is number 11 on the campus map.)
- Learning Resource Center (Buley Library, third floor) -- There are video CDs (Ask for Math 100 CDs), which contain lessons for Intermediate Algebra.
- Review sheets for final exams in MAT 95 (Elementary Algebra) and MAT 101 (Intermediate Algebra) are available online. Copies of worked-out solutions for these sheets are available for purchase at Tyco in the Student Center.
- MathXL Web Site -- This site contains tutorial software for Intermediate Algebra. To review the material covered in Southern's MAT 100 course, select the book by Rockswold, Intermediate Algebra through Modeling and Visualization. The access codes are bundled with the new textbooks for MAT 100. They can also be purchased separately.
- An online quiz that will help you practice factoring is available here.
