bachelor of science - applications of mathematics
In addition to the core courses required of all mathematics majors, the following are required:
- CSC 152 - Computer Programming I (CSC 140 and CSC 150 may be substituted, but CSC 152 is highly recommended.)
- MAT 245 - Differential Equations
- MAT 320 - Probability
- MAT 321 - Mathematical Statistics
- MAT 322 - Numerical Analysis I
- MAT 378 - Discrete Mathematics
- MAT 488 - Seminar in Mathematical Modeling
- and one additional course from among: MAT 375 - Abstract Algebra I, MAT 480 - Topology, MAT 450 - Analysis
- Also required are two additional cognate courses beyond those used to satisfy the university requirements, selected by the student with the approval of a departmental adviser, from any of the following areas of application: biology, chemistry, computer science, earth science, economics, physics, or another approved area of application.
- Additional elective courses in mathematics and the area of application should be chosen in consultation with a departmental adviser and can be selected to further career or graduate school objectives. Such courses include MAT 230 Mathematics of Compound Interest, MAT 422 - Numerical Analysis II, MAT 470 Operations Research I, and MAT 325 - Design of Experiments. An internship program is also available.
