Putnam Exam Seminars

The William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition, known more briefly as the Putnam Exam or the Putnam, is an annual mathematics competition open to undergraduates in the United States and Canada. Administrated by the Mathematical Association of America, the Putnam is widely regarded as the most challenging undergraduate mathematics examination given in America. To help Southern students prepare for the Putnam, the Department of Mathematics is running a Putnam seminar on Fridays from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. during Fall semester in EN D122. For more information about the Putnam Exam or the Putnam Exam Seminars, please contact Dr. Gingrich or Dr. Fields in Mathematics Department.

mathematical contest in modeling (MCM)

The Southern Mathematics Department has sponsored student teams in the annual international Mathematical Contest in Modeling. The competition is held over a four-day period in February, during which each team of three undergraduate students is asked to research, clarify, analyze, and propose a solution for one of two open-endend mathematical modeling problems. Further information can be found here.
