Welcome to the Southern Music Department
We are a lively group dedicated to learning about and making all types of music. We offer academic courses to majors and non-majors in music history, music theory, electronic music, and world music. We offer group lessons in guitar, voice, and piano. Our bands and choirs are open to majors and non-majors and present multiple performances every semester.
During the 2005-2006 academic year, the department
- re-dedicated the Charles Garner Recital Hall with an evening of student and faculty performance;
- sponsored master classes with Branford Marsalis and Terence Blanchard;
- presented over two dozen concerts by our ensembles: Concert Band, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Jubilee Singers, Jazz Ensembles, and chamber groups;
- celebrated the world premiere of Professor Mark Kuss' Concerto for Soprano Saxophone, which was commissioned by Branford Marsalis;
- hosted a concert of North Indian music.
You are invited to join us:
- as a listener (see Upcoming Concerts)
- as a learner (see Courses)
- as a member of one of our ensembles.
Our department office is located in Earl Hall (EA) 120. You can call us at (203) 392-6625.
