New first-time freshmen and their parents, as well as transfer students, will be introduced to the university during orientation sessions held on campus over the summer.

The newly restructured introduction to the university will be delivered during five two-day sessions being offered over the summer, followed up by a First-Year Experience course being taught during the fall semester. Students can choose which of the five orientation sessions they wish to attend, with a maximum of 250 students per session.

Each session will include an introduction to the university's resources, group and individual academic advising, and opportunities to socialize.

A parallel session for parents will provide information about services available to students at Southern as well as information on how parents and families can best support their new college students in their education.

The follow-up seminar, approved by the faculty, is a semester-long course taught by faculty members and will cover academic skills, navigating the university and using technology to support academic work. The instructor in each course will become the students' academic adviser.

Orientation sessions will be held on the following dates:

Session I       Wednesday, June 27 - Thursday, June 28

Session II      Monday, July 16 - Tuesday, July 17

Session III    Thursday, July 19 - Friday, July 20

Session IV     Monday, July 30 - Tuesday, July 31

Session V       Monday, August 6 - Tuesday, August 7

Transfer Student Orientation will be held on Friday, August 17.
