health assessment qualifying examination

Image of NursingAll graduate students are expected to demonstrate competency with basic health assessment knowledge and skills prior to taking their first clinical course (i.e., NUR 534 for FNP candidates, and NUR 523 for Education candidates). This is a competency-based requirement. Students may retake a section of the exam until competency is achieved.

Three components are tested:

  1. A theory exam consisting of about 100 multiple choice questions including labeling anatomy diagrams (a score of 74 is passing)
  2. Handing in a written actual history and physical of an adult
  3. Performance of a head-to-toe physical exam of an adult in 30 minutes or less without notes (see performance guidelines)

Appointments are needed and given on a first-come, first-served basis. Please call Dr. Santavenere at (203) 392-6486 to schedule an appointment. You will need to have a subject for your performance exam. 

A two-day review course  will be offered in early June for those needing to review material and practice skills. This is not a complete HA course but a review only. Please see graduate announcements page for details as they become available.
