BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING
The curriculum in the undergraduate nursing program is designed as an upper-division major. The program requires a strong liberal arts and science base as a prerequisite to nursing courses. Students complete theory courses in the major as well as hospital and community-based clinical practice. Full-time and part-time study options are available.
Admission
Students interested in the Nursing Program complete a two-step admission process.
- First, applicants apply to the university.
- Then, upon completion of at least seven of the 11 nursing prerequisites, application is made to the nursing department. All nursing prerequisites must be completed prior to enrolling in nursing courses. Admission is competitive, with a QPR of 2.7 being the minimum considered for acceptance. Qualified applicants may not be accepted because of a limit in the number of clinical placements. Applications are accepted once a year. In the past several years, students admitted to the program have had a GPA that has significantly exceeded the minimum 2.7 required for admission.
GPA, as well as other preadmission criteria, will be used as a way of evaluating students for acceptance into the nursing program. These may include, but are not limited to: entry admission testing, letters of recommendation, personal interview, and an evaluation of overall academic record (i.e., number of course withdrawals, prerequisite course failures, and academic success at other colleges and universities). Consistent with SCSU admission requirements, preference is given to those candidates who, in the judgment of Department of Nursing admission members, present through academic and personal qualifications the greatest potential for program success.
Applications for Fall of 2009 admittance will be available online November 1, 2008 and must be completed in full and returned by January 15, 2009 in order to be considered as a viable candidate.
Tranfer Students
Students are ineligible to apply for admision to the SCSU Nursing Program if:
-They have been dismissed for academic or clinical reasons in another nursing program.
-They have failed to meet benchmark scores on assessment testing in another nursing program.
Transfer students must be admitted to the university, prior to applying to the Nursing Department. Admission to the university must be completed by Dec. 1, if the applicant intends to meet the department's Feb. 1 deadline to be considered for the fall semester. Official transcripts and evaluation of transfer credit must be on file in the Department of Nursing.
Please note that applicants cannot apply to our 2 year BSN program and the ACE program.
