SCSU AWARDED $100,000 FOR ACCELERATED NURSING PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS -

NEW HAVEN -- Southern Connecticut State University is among 63 colleges and universities in the country to be selected for a 2010-11 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation nursing grant - marking the second year in a row that the school has been chosen to receive the funding.

SCSU's Nursing Department has been awarded $100,000 that will enable 10 students enrolled in the university's Accelerated Career Entry (ACE) nursing program to receive $10,000 scholarships. ACE is designed for individuals who are looking to make a career change into nursing and who already have a bachelor's degree in another field. The intensive program enables students to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in 12 months, about half the time it generally takes to earn such a degree at Southern. ACE includes a significant amount of hands-on experience in area hospitals and other health care facilities, as well as classroom and lab work.

SCSU will award the scholarships in time for the 2011-12 academic year. The New Careers in Nursing (NCIN) scholarship program is a joint effort by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Association of Colleges. The initiative is designed to help alleviate the nation's nursing shortage by expanding the pipeline of students in accelerated nursing programs, as well as to enhance diversity within the pool of nursing students.

Preference for the scholarships will be given to those students who belong to traditionally underrepresented groups in the field of nursing - such as racial and ethnic minorities, males and people from financially disadvantaged backgrounds.

"Through (this) program, we are challenging the nation's nursing schools to be innovative and resourceful in how they grow their nursing programs, diversify student populations and contribute to the nursing leadership of tomorrow," said Denise A. Davis, NCIN program officer. "We are very pleased to support this unique approach, particularly at a time when growing numbers of Americans are gaining insurance and entering our health care system."

"We are delighted about being selected for the grant for a second straight year," said Lisa Rebeschi, chairwoman of the SCSU Nursing Department. "It opens the door for some students to earn a nursing degree and pursue a career in the nursing field who otherwise might not have been able to afford to do so."

SCSU is one of three colleges and universities in Connecticut to be selected for this year's grant program. Student interest in the university's nursing program has grown steadily over the last decade, as have the number of programs within the Nursing Department.

A total of 511 students nationwide will receive NCIN scholarships this year.
