If you wish to send messages regularly to a group of people, you can create a personal distribution list in the email system. If you have a very large list, or if you'd like people other than yourself to be able to send mail to the list, you may need to use mailing list software such as LISTSERV.

LISTSERV enables a large group of people to communicate effectively with one another without requiring each person to maintain a mailing list of all the other participants. Additionally, LISTSERV can archive postings in a searchable online database, send indexed digests to participants instead of individual messages, and make sets of files publicly accessible by email.

Note that SCSU distinguishes between mass emailing for administrative purposes and those for interdepartmental or interpersonal communications.  Administrative mass mailings are regulated.  See Mass Email Procedures and Restrictions.

All full-time faculty and staff may request a LISTSERV mailing list.  The request should be made through the IT Helpdesk. Requests from student organizations must be made through the advisor.

As owner of a LISTSERV mailing list at Southern Connecticut State University, you have full responsibility for actively monitoring and maintaining the list. The subject matter covered by the list is up to you. By agreeing to own a LISTSERV list, you assume the responsibility of day-to-day monitoring and operation of the list. It is your job to ensure that the list continues to run smoothly and that all participants adhere to university policies and follow the list's stated objectives. You will be expected to subscribe to the list and monitor the discussions to ensure that the list is serving its intended purpose.

Each fall, LISTSERV list owners will receive a renewal notice via email. To renew a list, the owner must reply to the message by the date specified, or the list will be removed from the system.
