Welcome to Southern Connecticut State University!
Now that you have moved in to SCSU, the next step may be how to use the Internet while you are on campus, primarily in the rooms. You may be wondering what is needed to use the Internet in the residence halls. Here at SCSU, we try to make it as easy as possible while maintaining a secure network. Below you will find a few things we recommend and/or require to gain access to the Internet in the residence halls.
Computer Recommendations
The SCSU network is compatible with every major computer vendor on the market. If the computer has an ethernet card in it, your computer will connect to our network. A wireless ethernet card is optional, but recommended if you are thinking about a laptop and wish to use it in the many wireless locations across campus.
Getting Online
Getting connected to the Internet is as simple as plugging an ethernet cable into your computer and into the data jack (located below the phone jack) or an open port of the network hub (pre-installed in your room) Power on your machine and you should be connected to the Internet. Open Internet Explorer and follow the on-screen prompts to sign in.
Securing your computer
The University recommends that you protect/secure your computer with a firewall and antivirus software to safeguard you from threats on the Internet. Windows and Macintosh operating systems provide a built-in firewall that you should enable. If your computer does not have antivirus software installed, or it is expired and cannot receive updates, you can download and install our FREE copy of McAfee VirusScan. NOTE: Installing multiple antivirus
software packages on the same machine will cause the
computer to run extremely slowly.
The University also recommends that you update your operating system (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Macintosh OSX, etc...) using the built-in update utility. This will also safeguard your computer from vulnerabilities repaired by the vendors, and often provides you with the latest enhancements.
Wireless Internet
Visit the Wireless section of the OIT site for the latest on the wireless network throughout the campus.
Support
Support is provided for a working Internet connection to all residents. The University DOES NOT support student's personal machines. You must contact your vendor for assistance with any issues you may encounter. If you feel your network connection is not working, contact the SCSU Help Desk at (203) 392-5123 or by email at helpdesk@southernct.edu.
