The wireless communication devices include cell phones, data card services, PDAs, Blackberries, Treos or other telecommunication devices that have voice, text messaging, and/or data capabilities with a monthly service fee. It does not include pagers or mobile radios.
The following guidelines apply to University-issued devices:
OIT provides multiple levels of support for mobile devices – Full Support for University-issued mobile devices; Limited Support for personal devices owned by faculty and staff using University synchronization and application services; and No Support for all other mobile devices.
Full Support : Applies only to University-issued mobile devices and includes:
- Configuration, and diagnostic trouble shooting for use of University synchronization and application services.
- Configuration, and diagnostic trouble shooting for connection to University wireless network.
- Coordinate warranty repair services with vendor.
- Secured disposal of the device.
Limited Support: Applies to personal mobile devices owned by faculty and staff that meet the compatibility requirements of the University synchronization and application interface. To receive this level of support, faculty and staff must agree to comply to university security standards for smart phones. To sign up, fill out the personal phone activation request form with required signature and bring it to the IT Help Desk. The service includes:
- Configuration and diagnostic trouble shooting for use of University synchronization and application services.
- Configuration and diagnostic trouble shooting for connection to University wireless network.
Security Standards
All smart devices connected to university synchronization servers must comply the following security measures:
- Password enabled with 4-digit minimum
- Maximum 10 login attempts
- 15 min. security timeout
- auto-wipe immediately after 10 failed login attempts
- auto-wipe immediately after reported lost/stolen
- auto-wipe after employment termination

Standard synchronization setup for each supported device:
Windows Mobile/Blackberry Devices:
- E-mail client: Windows Mobile or Blackberry Email Client
- Calendar and contacts: MS Outlook
- Synch Tool: ActiveSync or Blackberry Enterprise Server
