What is Southern On the Move?
This program started as a walking group, but now we encourage participants to walk on their own, with friends or co-workers or in our quarterly group walk events. We send e-newsletters with information on setting & reaching activity goals, cooking and eating healthfully, and opportunities to be active on campus with the Fitness Center or other organizations.
Who is eligible to participate in this program?
All Southern students, faculty, and staff (FT & PT) are invited to take advantage of Southern on the Move.
As an employee, do I have to get permission from my supervisor to participate in Southern on the Move and attend the walks?
This program is designed so that everyone will be able to participate! The walks are scheduled during typical lunch times, and employees are encouraged to communicate with their supervisors their interest in participating in Southern on the Move. However, participating in the program does not mean that you have to attend the walks. We hope this will be a motivational program in which you will increase your physical activity throughout each day. Even if you cannot participate in the scheduled walks, we hope you will engage in activity on your own and track your progress through our program. We invite you to participate in any or all of the walks as your schedule allows.
What if I can't attend one of the scheduled walks?
The walks are not mandatory! The walks are a chance for you to stay active and meet new people. If you can't make a scheduled walk, or would rather walk on your own, that's fine! Just make sure you try to get at least 3-5 walks in per week.
What if I forget to wear my pedometer?
That's ok! Simply track your minutes of physical activity for the day. Next time, take your pedometer off at the end of the day and put it in a place you will revisit in the morning. Ex. by your tooth brush or night stand.
I lost my pedometer directions.
For another copy of the pedometer directions, please click here. Setting up the pedometer properly will make caloric expenditure and mileage more accurate. If you have any other questions about your pedometer, you can contact the Fitness Center at 203-392-8968, and someone can assist you.
What if I have health restrictions?
It is important to check with your doctor before beginning an exercise routine. If you have specific concerns be sure to bring them up to your doctor. Don't start or continue with an exercise program if you are experiencing any pain - check with a medical professional before continuing!
