Minutes of the Faculty Senate Meeting of December 12, 1998 were approved as presented.

 
Announcements:

(J. Fullmer): Committee members are needed on the Academic Policy Standing Committee.
The FDAC has developed a Faculty Teaching Award proposal. Vice-President Smith has already approved.
President Adanti has approved the Senate Resolution regarding senior Audits.

Special Guest Dean JP Thompson:

Dean Thompson was introduced, and engaged in dialogue.
 

• She summarized her vision for what she hopes to accomplish; to strengthen the School of Extended Learning, and to assist faculty with the introduction of technologies related to distance learning.
• Possibilities include expanding camps; to include high-school and middle-school students which should encourage future enrollments; to involve parents and relatives of prospective students.
• Liberal Studies program will be looked at closely to see where new ideas may be introduced.
• Special programs (Wintersession, Summersession, Intersession, etc.) and outreach programs will all be reviewed.
• Corporate concerns will be investigated in terms of what employers want from our graduates.
• She will work with the changing profile of our student population. Dean Thompson said that she had no clear, exact picture of what distance learning will hold for SCSU; rather, it is her intent to work with faculty, and incorporate their concerns into all programs.
• Similarly, she does not have a specific number of "on-line" courses in mind for SCSU. She views herself as a conduit for making what the faculty want to have happen become a reality. She intends to make the introduction of distance learning as smooth as possible.
• Quality issues regarding course content will remain the responsibility of the Faculty – her concerns regard specifically the quality of the technologies used to deliver courses to our students.
