Love, A Poem in Three Parts

1. Seduction

“Oh, yes,
let’s seduce each other
and get lost in movie clichés
until we can’t breathe,” I said.

“No,” she said.

“Damn it all,” I said.

2. Juliana Hatfield

“I can’t love you,
and I’m not about to,” she said.
“Perfect, because I love someone else,”
I said. “When she sings,
‘Love me, love, but just don’t touch,’
I say, ‘Of course, Juliana.
I’ll do or not do
anything you want or don’t want me to.’”

3. Rejection

“I love you,” I said.
“I live on our love.
When I love you and feel that you love me,
that’s all the fuel I need,
and as long as we love each other,
I can never be tired
or tire of loving you.”

“Bull,” she said. “Screw you.”

“Damn it all,” I said.
