Table 8: Computer-Specific Ethical Issues (Parker, et al., 1988, p.2) Computer Issue Concern 1. Repositories/processors of information: unauthorized use of otherwise unused computer services or of information stored in computers raises questions of appropriateness, fairness, invasion of privacy and freedom of information. 2. New forms and types of assets: such as algorithms or computer programs that may not be subject to the same concepts of ownership as other assets. 3. Instruments of acts: degree to which providers of computer services and users of computers, data and programs are responsible for integrity and appropriateness of their computer output. 4. Symbols of intimidation/deception: anthropomorphic view of computers as thinking machines, infallible truth producers that are subject to blame.
