Track Report:
Teaching Computer Ethics

National Conference on Computing and Values
Report on the Track:
Teaching Computer Ethics

The National Conference on Computing and Values occurred on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University, August 12 – 16, 1991. One of the six conference “tracks” was devoted to the topic “Teaching Computer Ethics.” The Track Coordinator for that track was Professor Keith Miller of the Computer Science Department at the College of William and Mary. This Appendix is Professor Miller’s summary report on the activities, events and recommendations of that track.

Overview

The Teaching Computing and Values track at the NCCV conference was the most heavily attended. Most of the participants considered themselves educators, but they had diverse backgrounds in industry, business, and government. This diversity led to lively and (in the main) constructive discussions. From comments that I received, many people found the track sessions as well as the other conference events challenging and informative. The diversity and the size of the teaching track complicated the job of coordination, but the resulting breadth of experience was, in my opinion, the major strength of the teaching track.

Whenever there are lists of people, I have tried to list them alphabetically by last name.
