Minutes for Friday, September 18, 2009


  1. I.            Meeting called to order at: 1:06 p.m. –Willie Garcia
  2. II.            Roll call:

a. Representatives at Large:  Absent: Dan Rosa   Late: Sharise Tucker, Andrew Marullo, Rick Dematties

b. Student Guests: Maggie Lonczewski, Nicole Cassidy, Nick Guido, Chris Rosa, Jeff Clancy, John Eno, Mary Higgins, Marisa Genova, Andrew Pugliese, Mike Cipressi, Amandeep Kaur, Sahil Panwar, Jermaine Williams, Jay Henderson and Andrew Chu.

  1. III.            Approval of Minutes: Brianna makes a motion to approve the minutes, Brian seconds. Minutes for September 11, 2009 approved.
  2. IV. Guest: Tyler Wentland a graduate intern from the Women’s Center spoke on the work he will be doing on the Men’s Initiative this semester. He thanked SGA for our support with funding for the First Year Experience program that is linked with the initiative he is working on. This semester some programs will be sponsored by the Men’s Initiative. Tyler requested that a member of SGA introduce the speaker on Wednesday, September 23rd, at the “Voices of Men” program. He would like the support of all student leaders but emphasized the specific need for our male student leaders to support this initiative.
  3. V.            President’s Report: Willie Garcia
    1. SMART Initiative: The pick up date was Wednesday, September 16th and it went very well. Students were very appreciative and the university photographer even came to take pictures. There are still about 20 students who haven’t picked up their computers; and there will be two more pick up dates Wednesday, September 23rd and Friday, September 25th .
    2. Committee Representatives: If anyone is available Wednesdays at noon to serve on the Faculty Senate, please Willie.
    3. Vice President’s Report: The board chairs meeting will be immediately after this meeting. SGA Members need to be regularly attending events that SGA sponsor. Willie, Ben and Chuck will be attending the Student Advisory Board (SAB) meeting, with the  three other CSU schools next Friday. If you have anything you would like for them to speak about, please let Ben know before next Friday.
    4. Secretary’s Report: Attendance procedures have changed from least year, roll will be taken for members of SGA, and a sign up sheet will be passed out for all other students in attendance. It is important that student guests sign in so that we know how many meetings you have attended. The minutes will now be posted on the SGA website.
    5. Treasurer’s Report: Copies of the budget are available on the side table for your review.  All purchase requisitions need to go through Quinton and Char so that the money is properly disbursed through the correct org. number. Email or see Quinton during his office hours if you have any questions.
    6. Day of Service: There is a sign up sheet, if you are interested, please sign up. All SGA members must be in attendance for this event!
    7. Board Reports: Ben- Board chairs, must have a definite meeting times established by next week.
    8. BSI: Chuck- At the last board meeting BSI discussed the locker situation; there is a waiting list for lockers in the student center. There are over one hundred lockers available in Morill that will hopefully be issued to students on the waiting list soon. Chuck spoke with Angela Todaro about the landscaping in the residential quad area and BSI will be meeting with IRC necessary improvements. BSI will also begin working with the residence life staff to host student forums in the residence halls. Tentative dates have been set for September 30, October 5th, October 7th at 7 p.m. They also hope to hold public forums in Connecticut Hall and the Student Center this semester.
    9. BOF: Mo- Meetings are Mondays at 3:30 p.m. next to the meeting room around the corner of the SGA office. If you are interested, please see Mo after meeting.
    10. BEIM: Katie P.- BEIM is reviewing office hours and emails will come out soon. Remember to email Katie when you sit your hours and include an overview of what you worked on. If the email system is down please email from your personal account. Missing office hours will result in a missed meeting and action will be taken. Please avoid having a lot of friends in the office for long periods of time. If there is free time during office hours, members should stop by Student Life to see if there is anything to help with.
    11. BCR: Sharise- Constitution Day is coming up. We will celebrate on Thursday, September 24th and would love some volunteers to help with this day. Anthony is working with us on coordinating activities. Since we receive money from the Federal Government we are required to celebrate Constitution Day. BCR meetings are Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m.
    12. BPR: Tom- The board is working on a newsletter for students, if you have anything to add to it, please see Tom. Hopefully this will be done by next week; we are trying to work with the newspaper. BPR meetings are Fridays at 3 p.m.
    13. BOCOM: Stefan- BOCOM has not yet set a permanent meeting time, but this week they will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the SGA office. This week BOCOM worked on the survey regarding the leadership retreat weekend. The clusters will be sent out information soon. Club attendance rates have been very good this year. There has also been great attendance at athletics events.
  1. VI.            New Business:
    1. College Night: Matt- Matt worked at the event and reported that he saw a good amount of people from Southern there. The shuttles came back and forth from Southern all night. There was a facebook group about it, and posters around campus.
    2. Homecoming: Leila- The promotions for the week have begun to go out. Homecoming King and Queen Guidelines will be sent out soon!
    3. Friday Night Free for All: Brian- Southern Slumber will be the next FFFFA event on October 9th which is a PJ party on the 3rd floor of the student center. FFFFA is considering the possibility of doing a Halloween event.
    4. d. SAFAC: Ben- The committee met this Tuesday and approved two events.  The committee is looking to direct everyone into using campus resources as much as they can. The committee is definitely helping with the communication between IRC, ProCon and SGA. Proposals go to the chair of the committee (Ben), and are then discussed at the meeting. Any initiates that were set up last year, such as late night programming and Thursday nights would go to SAFAC, but clubs and organizations can go to BOF if they need help with conferences and budgets.
    5. Uniforms: Ben- The polo’s that SGA ordered are still not finished. The fleeces are in production right now, along with T-shirts which will be coming in soon.
    6. Shuttles: On Saturday there were 90 passengers to the mall, and the rest of the days were similar to last weekend.
    7. VII. Announcements and Concerns:
      1. Last year the BOF allocated money for the Abraham Lincoln bicentennial celebration for this year, November 20th, see Quinton for more details.
      2. Thank you to everyone that came out to our events this week!
      3. There has been great feedback about the events that have been going on, we really need to keep supporting all the events that are done on campus.
      4. Thanks for attending our meeting, continue to stay involved and help whenever possible.
