PLACEMENT EXAMS

Welcome to Southern Connecticut State University.  Now that you have been admitted to Southern, you will need to take placement exams so the university can assess your basic skills in English composition, mathematics, and foreign language.  The exams are not pass/fail; rather, they are used to place you in the courses appropriate to your level of preparation.

WHO SHOULD TAKE PLACEMENT EXAMS?

  • All first-time college students (full-time and part-time admitted freshmen)
  • Full-time and part-time transfer students who have not received transfer credit for college-level English composition or mathematics
  • Current students who have not taken placement exams

PARENTS PROGRAM

While students take placement exams, parents/families are invited to attend an informal welcoming reception in Engleman B121.  University staff will provide a brief overview of recent developments and future plans at the university, and will review the "NEXT STEPS" which prospective students need to take to join the university community for Fall 2008.  tours of the campus, including residence facilities, will be led by upperclass students.  Parents will be encouraged to take the next step to register to participate in one of the five, one-day Parent/Family Orientation programs which run concurrently with the New Student Orientation Sessions in June with more details found at www.southernct.edu/orientation.

The SCSU Bookstore will be open on exam dates from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  It is located in the Adanti Student Center.

WHERE ARE EXAMS HELD?

Exams are held on campus.  When you register for the exam, the location of the exam will be listed.  The Math exam has several locations, but all students should report to Jennings 130.  Any overflow will be directed to Morrill 08 and 13.  For the convenience of out-of-state students, one placement exam date is offered on Wednesday, June 11, immediately preceding Session II of New Student Orientation, June 12 and 13.  This will allow students to attend placement exams and orientation in one trip.

DIRECTIONS AND PARKING

Directions to the University are available online at http://www.southernct.edu/aboutscsu/map/ as well as a map of the university.

Parking is available in the Faculty/Staff Lot and parking garage, both located on Fitch Street.  Parking signs will be posted on exam days.

WHAT TESTS DO i NEED TO TAKE?

Below is the list of exams.  Students are strongly encouraged to read the Helpful Preparation Guides for information about each exam.

  1. English Composition
  2. Mathematics (no calculators are allowed)
  3. Foreign Language (optional exam - read note below)
  • Foreign language is a general education requirement at the university, but the placement exam is optional; however, it must be taken upon entrance if a student wishes to be placed to a level of foreign language or waive the foreign language requirement.  If you choose not to take a foreign language exam, your placement into foreign language will be based on your high school foreign language experience. You will not have another opportunity to take the foreign language exam.

How Do I Register?

  1. You will need your MySCSU username, which you received in your admissions letter.
  2. You will need your MySCSU password which you received in your admissions letter.  Your initial password is your six digit birthdate, MMDDYY (e.g., March 18, 1989 is 031889).  Alternatively, if you need to reset your MySCSU password you will need to contact the SCSU Helpdesk by phone.
  3. You are required to take all exams on the same date.  Exams are scheduled so that there will be no time conflicts, and you will only be able to select consecutive exams not concurrent exams (i.e., an 8:30 exam, a 10:30 exam, and if you wish, foreign language at 1:00 p.m.).
