Expectations
Homework
You will have regular homework assignments to be completed prior to each class session. You will be accessing information via the World Wide Web and will report on what you discover there. All written homework assignments are due on the day assigned; late homework will not be accepted.
Class Participation
The only way to learn a language is to use the language. Given your goals of good communicative proficiency, regular attendance and preparation are essential. Class time will be designed for your active learning: you will work with other students on such tasks as interviewing, reporting, describing, narrating and so forth. To use this class time effectively, you need to come prepared (i.e. having completed your homework assignment), and you must actively participate in activities. "Regular attendance" means coming to class all the time; you are given points for class participation, and missing class means forfeiting those points. If illness or emergencies keep you out of class, contact your instructor by phone or email. More than three unexcused absences will result in a lowering of your final grade one level for each additional absence.
Exams
There will be three tests throughout the semester, in addition to a final exam. The tests will consist of reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Project
You will complete a major group project throughout the course of the semester. This will involve researching a major German city and producing a brochure, a web site, a presentation using the material you as a group have accumulated.
Grading
Because language learning involves a wide variety of activities, you will earn points for every aspect of your work. Here is how those points break down:
| Class participation | 50 % |
|---|---|
| Homework & Quizzes | 20 % |
| Project | 30 % |
| Total | 100 % |
IMPORTANT: A "0" in any one area will result in failure of the course.
