Expectations

Homework

You will have regular homework assignments to be completed prior to each class session. You will be accessing information via the World Wide Web and will report on what you discover there. All written homework assignments are due on the day assigned; late homework will not be accepted.

Class Participation

The only way to learn about the stars is to think about them and talk about them with others. Given your goals of star gazing, regular attendance and preparation are essential. Class time will be designed for your active learning: you will work with other students on such tasks as checking out the stars, drawing paths to the closest ones, relating adventures in space, and so forth. To use this class time effectively, you need to come prepared (i.e. having completed your homework assignment), and you must actively participate in activities. "Regular attendance" means coming to class all the time; you are given points for class participation, and missing class means forfeiting those points. If illness or emergencies keep you out of class, contact your instructor by phone or email. More than three unexcused absences will result in a lowering of your final grade one level for each additional absence.

Exams

There will be three tests throughout the semester, in addition to a final exam. The tests will consist of essays, drawings and doodlings.

Project

You will complete a major group project throughout the course of the semester. This will involve researching a major star and producing a map on how to get there.

Grading

Because the stars are a vast subject, you will earn points for every aspect of your work. Here is how those points break down:

Course Grades
Class participation 30 %
Homework & Quizzes 30 %
Project 30 %
Anything else 10 %
Total 100 %

IMPORTANT: A "0" in any one area will result in failure of the course.
