RESEARCH
I have
done a considerable amount of consulting with local public schools
to develop appropriate reading programs for students with intellectual
disabilities, mental retardation, and other developmental disabilities.
The goal of these consults is to develop accommodations and modifications
of the regular curriculum that can be adapted to the regular classroom
and be reinforced by the regular and special education teachers.
As I have monitored these programs, it becomes clear that most districts
need support in modifying materials as well as using supplemental
aides such as digital cameras, vocabulary portfolios, and electric
highlighting. Most students respond very well to these accommodations,
and we have been successful in building quality programs for students.
